They were involved in showcasing their artwork at the Muddy Waters Art Gallery in Dargaville along with other schools. “Our students also had an awesome experience at Sue and Ozzie Rokstadt’s home in Aoroa learning about worm farming. We will have the pleasure of working with Sue next term to help us get our own worm farm operating,” said principal Sonia Simeon. Teacher Carla Hill says the lunch was part of a learning exercise and celebration of Matariki. “Students celebrated Matariki this year by taking a visit to Te Houhanga Marae where they participated in workshops and learnt about the history and culture of the marae, and where senior students helped with the preparation of a hangi. “Everyone enjoyed the hands on learning experience.” Mrs Hill says the entire school is grateful for Te Houhanga Marae, “for their knowledge and Manaakitanga (hospitality).”

You’ve never seen standard like this before

Some rules were made to be broken. When John Deere designed the 3036E Compact Utility Tractor, they stretched the boundaries for what a standard tractor could be. They added high-end features like a dual range hydrostatic transmission, a powerful 36Hp engine, 4-Wheel Drive and an ergonomic operator station. When you put all this together you won’t find better value.

Case moved to higher court  by Paul Campbell

The former chief executive of the Kaipara District Council, Jack McKerchar, will now face his accusers in the Employment Court on KDC claims that he failed in his statutory duties in dealing with the ill-starred Mangawhai sewerage scheme. The increased cost to ratepayers is still the subject of separate litigation. The council case against Mr McKerchar, filed with the Employment Relations Authority, is that he had breached his statutory duties under the Local Government Act 2002 and failed to comply with the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002. However, before the ERA was involved, Mr McKerchar had entered into a deed of settlement with the KDC which terminated his employment a year

before his contract was due to expire. He claimed that deed was full and final settlement of all matters arising from his employment and it barred the council making claims against him. He also claimed the council released the deed to the public, causing him distress and loss of reputation, and he sought damages for breach of contract. In its turn, council claimed Mr McKerchar’s alleged breaches only surfaced after the deed of settlement was finalised.

A hearing date for the Employment Court has yet to be set. Mr McKerchar was first employed by the council in 1993 and his last contract was to expire on October 31, 2012. The deed of settlement that saw him leave was signed on August 2, 2011. 

Mr Sibery’s appointment began the same week as associate local government minister, Louise Upston, announced current commissioner Peter Winder is to act as a crown manager for a period of three years following the local body elections on October 8. “Mr Winder will support council members by taking  Kaipara District Council chief executive Graham Sibery responsibility for legal actions relating to past issues on their behalf. The ERA has now released its decision that public interest dictates that the issue be moved to the higher Employment Court, where normally, the higher venue would usually hear any appeal on an ERA judgement. “The matters between the parties have been the subject of intense media scrutiny,” said ERA member, Anna Fitzgibbon. “The statement of problem filed by the council includes wide ranging allegations against Mr McKerchar and his alleged failure in his role as CEO to comply with his statutory and contractual duties. “These failures allegedly led to, among other things, serious issues concerning the assessment and setting of rates by the council and the withholding of rates by a number of ratepayers in the community.”

The teams need to raise $10,000 each to cover the costs and support crew member for the year seven team and parent, Brenda Polwart, says they have been overwhelmed with the support from the community and local businesses. “Everyone has been great in supporting our fundraising campaign. We have had raffles, cupcakes sales, a stall at the Matariki festival, sausage sizzles and a successful application to Pub Charities. We are well on our way to achieving our $10,000 goal. “The girls understand if they work hard to get there they will enjoy and appreciate the experience more. They are dedicated netballers who work hard

at their sport, but we are also focussing on the life experience it will give them,” she says. Year eight coach Te Atawhai Ulutaufanua says the games will give the girls a chance to challenge themselves. “Being a small community this is great opportunity for the players. They will get the chance to play against some of the best teams from around the world.” The games are considered the International Championships for Intermediate and Middle schools and this year will see 9,300 competitors representing 265 schools from throughout New Zealand with 1344 netballers making up 112 teams. 

Acknowledging charity work  by Ann Morgan

Kaiwaka resident Milly O’Leary has been made a member for the Order of St John for her years of charity work, particularly for founding the Kaiwaka St John charity shop six years ago. “It is such an honour to receive this award. I started the shop to support St John ambulance here in Kaiwaka as a thank you to them for the support they gave my son who died 10-years-ago. “He was a bronchial asthmatic and used the ambulance service a lot,” said Milly. “I could not have achieved what I have without the support of my husband Ray who supports me and also works at the shop, and my volunteer staff and the community. They have all helped make this journey a success.” Mrs O’Leary’s efforts has seen the shop raise more than $70,000 — a substantial effort and she was the only recipient who received a karanga — ceremonial tribute, after being awarded the medal at the ceremony in Auckland recently. “It was also the last official

event for Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae as his term has finished. As Sir Jerry and I were standing up the front of St Patrick’s Cathedral shaking hands my cousin, Janette Nathan, unexpectedly stood up and gave a karanga. This rung out through the church and it was such a surprise. It echoed beautifully throughout the building. It was so special. “Only three of us wore a cloak. It was such an honour. “Our patron Mr Blundell was at the event and he was overcome with emotion. It was a beautiful experience. “Everyone who supports us at the shop are part of this award and I would like to thank them dearly.” 

It is extremely important that our consumers are aware of their obligations around the upkeep of service lines – those are the lines taking the power into your house, woolshed, cowshed or farm shed. Over time, these service lines degrade – just like power poles do.

THERE IS A FULL TIME PRIVATE CLINIC IN WHANGAREI, RUN BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH PROBLEMS  Jo Carvalho said goodbye to Sam and Chloe Stirling and circus life in Dargaville. He arrived from France in 2008 and has been involved at Circus Kumarani for nearly seven years. “I met the Kumarani guys in 2009 and have been here ever since,” said Jo. “The community spirit here is incredible and really supportive. The children I have worked with at the after school and school holiday programmes have been a lot of fun and they have helped to teach me about the Maori culture and brush up on my English language. It is now time to move on and travel again but I will still be involved in special events.”

Such as troublesome bleeding; menopause concerns; abnormal smears; pelvic pain; pain or irritation ‘down there’; fertility issues; non surgery options for prolapse and bladder problems. Many of the common problems can be treated with simple minor procedures done either at the clinic or at Kensington Hospital. The emphasis at the clinic is on making sure women have as much information as possible about their own health on which to base their decisions as to the type of treatment that is best for them. Dr. Rachel Moss, the specialist gynaecologist, can see you to make a thorough gynaecological assessment and discuss options for treatment. A GP referral can be helpful but is not essential.

LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS 2016

A passion for the environment

A progressive approach

A passion for restoring the Kaipara Harbour has motivated former Kaipara District Council employee, Mark Vincent, to stand for the Kaipara ward of the Northland Regional Council.

A passion for community wellbeing and sound governance has motivated Libby Jones of Paparoa to stand for election to the Kaipara District Council in the Otamatea Ward, as well as for the Northland District Health Board as a representative of the Kaipara.

Mr Vincent and his wife Cindy run a small scale dairy support operation on the shores of the Kaipara Harbour and he is known for his work improving the health of the harbour and his involvement with the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group before forming the Otamatea HarbourCare Society. “I believe my experience in the local government planning and regulatory areas are of critical importance given the Regional Plan review process the NRC is underway with at present. My involvement with the IKHMG, along with ongoing governance experience as a commissioner with the Kaipara District Council and Whangarei District Council Licencing Committees is also relevant,” says Mr Vincent. As a school leaver Mr Vincent volunteered with Volunteer Service Abroad in Fiji and he says this, along with his post-graduate diploma in Development Studies have given him an understanding in sustainable development. “I don’t think we have to make a choice between the environment and the economy — I firmly believe we can

Ms Jones says she is passionate about the area and sees the potential of working together more effectively across the district to achieve better outcomes. “We have new people moving into our area bringing a variety of skills, and there is a great opportunity to take advantage of this growth with good planning and sound governance,” she says. “I believe that our new council will need to look forward and build on the gains that have been made already. I want Kaipara to become known as a progressive, innovative district where we listen to our communities’ needs and make well-informed and transparent governance decisions.” Ms Jones and her husband Pete a have lived in the area for the last 26 years, and farm beef cattle and run dairy grazers on their two blocks in the Paparoa district. She says this background gives her a good understanding of the challenges that rural people face with limited infrastructure and amenities, and getting access to services.

His work with the Otamatea HarbourCare Society sees him liaise with landowners, arranging planting groups and running the nursery with volunteer support. “I want the good work which is being done to restore the health of our harbour to continue, and I want to ensure that we have the right settings in our regional plans which enable that as well as support existing businesses and encourage innovation.” 

 Libby Jones of Paparoa will stand for Kaipara District Council in the Otamatea Ward, and for the Northland District Health Board as a representative of the Kaipara

Ms Jones spent one term as a director on the Northland District Health Board, and was then appointed on the DHB’s Hospital Advisory Committee. She is currently the deputy chair of the Rural Support Trust Northland, and has recently joined Volunteering Northland as a Kaipara voice. She also brings 12 years’ experience on local school boards of trustees, has been on the Kaipara Community Health Trust and is a member of New Zealand Institute of Directors. 

Police caution rural jay walkers

 by Ayla Miller

 by Rose Stirling

If you are walking on a rural highway or an open country road when you could be walking on a grass verge or a footpath you are in fact breaking the law and putting your life and the lives of others at risk. That’s the message from police after a Dargaville resident says they were put in harm’s way when two people out walking decided for unknown reasons not to move off a country road despite oncoming traffic. Dargaville resident Shon Mackie-Kati was driving along Mount Wesley road recently when she came across two ladies who she says took up, “the whole side of the road” and didn’t try to move Photo courtesy NZ Police off, despite her car hurtling  Police monitor a local highway towards them. “As there was a truck coming on the other side and the for pedestrians,” he says. Years of dedication to training and studying has finally paid off for eight Northland teenagers who received their Kenpo Karate Black Belts at the Dargaville venue of the Northland Kenpo Karate Self Defence School.

 Hard work paid off for eight Northland Kenpo Karate Self Defence School who have recently received their black belts

Ron Mason, the head instructor in the Northland region and internationally graded sixth Dan, was joined by senior black belts to test the students on their various skills in this martial art over two days. The students have been training for between six to ten years for this occasion. “It is unashamedly aimed at selfdefence and through this, personal growth and improved physicality. A wide range of skills were required to successfully test ranging from selfdefence scenarios, forms or katas, basics, bag work, mat and ground work, sparring, breaking and summaries of

lessons on stress and brain freeze, self-defence and its legal implications and aggression in as much that it works for you or against you,” said Mr Mason. Kenpo originated in Hawaii as a result of Asian influences from migration around the Pacific Rim over the last 180 years and extended to the United States in the mid-1950s. Mr Mason says he is very proud of his students, many of whom he has worked with since they were much younger. “They have come in not knowing anything about it and they have committed themselves to their training and put in a tremendous amount of work, study and commitment.” 

Orchard for community  by Ann Morgan

The Maungaturoto Community Orchard will be devoted to growing fruit for the community and opportunities for developing orcharding skills will be available through involvement. “The Residents Association are doing this in conjunction with the Maungaturoto Country Club to encourage families to go for walks together and to take some fruit home or to eat on the walk,” said organiser Diana Moore. “There is a lot of excitement in the community. Our aim is to have fruit available year round. We plan to have about 20 varieties of trees. The orchard will be planted along the public walkway of the Maungaturoto Country Club grounds, adding to the existing plum trees that were planted in the past. “It will be maintained by volunteers. The fruit will be available to everyone in the community.” People are welcome to donate a specific tree or the group can purchase it on behalf. They would prefer not to

 by Ann Morgan

Justin and Sam Healey have moved premises in Paparoa from the historic hotel to the Cruiser Bar and Grill at the other end of town. “We want to concentrate on food more and this property has a really good family friendly atmosphere so we decided to take it. We have revamped the dining room and are redecorating,” said Sam. “There is an alfresco setting and deck outside and a little hut which we are turning into an area for children to play in whilst adults sit and enjoy a meal outside. We are very excited about the new beginning.” The Cruiser is open six days a week Tuesday to Sunday from 7.30am–10pm. Breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are available as well as cabinet food, pizzas and coffee and they have a Sunday roast buffet. Meanwhile new managers at the Paparoa Hotel, Kat and Aaron Morris from Vancouver, Canada, will reopen with a new name — The Thirsty Raven. “Aaron was born in Canada but grew up in Napier. I have spent the past nine years trying to convince him to move back to New Zealand and I finally won,” said Kat. “Being in Paparoa is beautiful. The locals have been very welcoming. I grew up on Vancouver Island in Canada so this is like being a kid again. We are really excited to give new life to this old lady. “We are redecorating to make it more welcoming and updating the kitchen. Our menu will use fresh local produce
